Spring home maintenance checklist

Spring is the home's reset. After a damp winter, this is the time to find what's worked loose, what's let water in, and what wants a coat of paint before the warmer months.

High priority

Tackle these as soon as the weather is dry.

Damp & winter damage

  • Walk every room looking for damp patches and condensation marksCatch issues now, before paintwork hides them.
  • Inspect window reveals and corners for black mouldWash with a mould remover and improve ventilation in that room.
  • Check loft for daylight, water staining or damp insulationAnything new since last spring is worth investigating.

Roof, gutters & exterior

  • Inspect the roof for slipped, cracked or missing tilesUse binoculars from the ground if it's not safe to climb.
  • Re-clear gutters and downpipesSpring blossom and seed pods clog them just as fast as autumn leaves.
  • Check fascias, soffits and bargeboardsLook for peeling paint, soft timber or wasp nests starting up.
  • Inspect render and pointingTap suspicious areas — a hollow sound means it has blown.

Sealing & weatherproofing

  • Check external silicone around windows, doors and meter boxes
  • Re-seal bathroom silicone if it's gone black or splitSpring is ideal — surfaces dry quickly.
  • Test the bathroom and kitchen extractor fansA sheet of paper should be held lightly against the grille.

Heating & water

  • Book the annual boiler serviceEngineers are far less booked up than in autumn.
  • Bleed the radiators one last time before the heating goes off
  • Check the loft and external taps for any signs of a freeze split

Safety

  • Test smoke and CO alarms and replace batteries
  • Check the loft hatch and fire doors close fully
  • Inspect garden gates, fences and outdoor handrailsWinter wind tends to loosen everything.
Medium priority

Set the home up for a clean, comfortable summer.

Decorating & touch-ups

  • Touch up scuffed paintwork in hallways and stairsSpring temperatures are kind to emulsion drying.
  • Repaint window sills and door frames where the finish has worn
  • Fill and sand minor wall cracks before painting
  • Plan one room redecoration if it's neededRefresh, repair, redecorate — straightforward work, sensibly scheduled.

Windows & doors

  • Wash all windows inside and out
  • Lubricate window hinges and locks with light oil
  • Adjust any doors that swelled and stickOften just a hinge tweak or a strike plate move.

Kitchen & bathroom

  • Re-grout small areas where grout has cracked or fallen out
  • Descale taps, shower heads and the kettle
  • Check under-sink areas for slow leaksA torch and a tissue around joints reveals most of them.

Outdoor & garden

  • Jet wash patios, paths and deckingClears moss before slip season is fully over.
  • Re-stain or oil sheds, fences and decking
  • Service the lawn mower and check garden tools
  • Check outside taps for drips and leaks

Comfort & order

  • Swap winter bedding for lighter weight
  • Vacuum behind furniture and radiators
  • Wipe down skirting, switches and door tops
Low priority

The finishing touches that lift the whole house.

Refresh & ambience

  • Wash curtains and blinds
  • Rotate and vacuum the mattress
  • Clean light shades and lamp bases

Storage & order

  • Declutter the entrance hall and shoe storage
  • Sort the loft or garageOne zone at a time.
  • Tidy the under-stairs cupboard

Outside aesthetics

  • Repaint the front door if it's gone tired
  • Clean the house number, letterbox and door furniture
  • Wipe down outdoor lights and bin store
